Details: The Salvation Army has been active in Broward County since 1926. The agency provides transitional housing with support services to 50 families with children and 40 single individuals and emergency shelter to another 300 men and women each month. New Beginnings, a program for homeless pregnant women is unique in Broward County. It provides housing and support to women working to gain self sufficiency and a stable life for their children. Dinner is served to an average of 70 people five evenings each week though our community feeding program. In addition to housing homeless people, a food pantry supplies groceries to an average of 100 people each week and rent/mortgage and utility assistance helps families in emergency situations avoid homelessness. Senior citizens enjoy weekly Home League programs and the holidays allow us to supply Christmas toys and cheer to 3400 children and Thanksgiving dinner to 400 needy people. A summer day camp, a residential camp, and Yes Kids Can! enrichment program are all designed to help low income and homeless children In times of natural and man-made disasters, The Salvation Army is a first responder, providing food, water and emotional support to victims and emergency workers such as police and firefighters.
