Details: The Lydia Project provides free services to women any where facing any type of cancer. his support includes ongoing correspondence and encouragement every month for at least twelve months. Locally, Lydia grants funds for rent, utility, medical supplies, and prescription assistance to women who are unable to afford these basic expenses while undergoing cancer treatment and who reside in Georgia's Burke, Columbia, McDuffie and Richmond Counties; and South Carolina's Aiken and Edgefield Counties. Women needing overnight stay to receive cancer treatment or testing in the CSRA find incredible help from Lydia's lodging services. The ten bedroom facility with twenty beds and a private bathroom for each room provides a retreat environment for women and their caregivers. Women who reside more than thirty miles from Augusta or Aiken can stay at the Daksha Chudgar Lydia House for closer proximity to their physician or treatment site. Every woman served receives a handmade, designer tote filled with encouraging items and Lydia's copyrighted journal. Although each tote is unique in design, all are carried by a purple handle that is a visual bond between women coping with cancer. In many cities nationwide, physician offices and hospitals distribute Lydia totes directly to patients. Lydia provides physicians, nurses, social workers and other healthcare professionals a place to go for supportive and financial assistance for their patients. Just having the extra support Lydia gives makes an impacting difference in patients' care. Lydia meets a humanitarian need beyond that normally provided. Women in all 50 states and many countries have received totes and support from Lydia.Dedicated volunteers all over the nation help make outreach possible to women served. The Lydia Project is a grassroots 501(c)3 nonprofit charity begun by a group of Augusta, GA businesswomen and community supporters in 2003. The project is named for Lydia, who appears just briefly in the Bible. (Acts 16: 14-15). She was a successful businesswoman in the trade of purple cloth. Using her gifts, Lydia extended a hand to those in need. In the same way, Lydia's purple-handled totes include a network of support and are monogrammed with "faith" "hope" or "love"~ ensuring women and their families are not alone during such a devastating time.
