Details: We are a public-private partnership, locally managed and controlled by volunteer boards of directors for the purpose of reducing poverty and promoting self-sufficiency of the poor. Since their founding under the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964, the network of Community Action Agency’s has become a real safety net for America's low-income population. Community Action Agency’s serve both the long-term and the temporary poor, public assistance recipients and the working poor; the low-income elderly, handicapped and children of the unemployed, the homeless and any other population that meets the eligibility criterion. VISION: All individuals within Williamsburg/ James City County will have the skills and opportunities necessary to maintain economic self-sufficiency. MISSION: To help individuals and families obtain the skills and find the opportunities that will move them toward self-reliance; to provide assistance when necessary; and to educate the public in Williamsburg and James City County about the causes and effects of, as well as the solutions to poverty.
